SUMMARY:Free Evening Yoga at Yoga Nature
DESCRIPTION:Free Evening Yoga at Yoga Nature \nJoin us for a series of free evening classes. An invitation to experience yoga as we live and share it at Yoga Nature. \nThese sessions gently explore postural practice (āsana)\, breath (prāṇāyāma)\, relaxation\, and meditation\, not as separate techniques\, but as interconnected ways of remembering the body’s innate intelligence. \nAt Yoga Nature\, we understand yoga as a remembering - a returning. A softening back into relationship with self\, with breath\, and with the land beneath us. Rather than striving or reaching outward\, our practice invites you inward\, towards a deeper\, quieter connection that is already present. \nOur teaching is layered and spacious. Rather than directing you into one fixed shape\, we offer a range of options so you can meet yourself exactly as you are. Some will choose to move; others may rest\, observe\, or visualise the practice from within. All of this is yoga. \nOur approach is also deeply seasonal. Just as the land shifts\, so too do we. We attune our practices to the time of year\, honouring cycles of expansion and contraction\, energy and rest\, so that yoga becomes something lived and felt\, rather than something imposed. \nRooted in the principle of ahiṃsā (non-harm)\, our practice invites a deep respect for both body and Earth. As we learn to listen inwardly\, moving with care rather than force\, we are gently guided towards a way of being that honours and protects our Great Mother - Earth. In this way\, yoga becomes not only a personal practice\, but a relational one. \nWith over 40 years of shared experience\, Ben and Jo teach from lived practice. Yoga here is not just something we do\, it’s something we inhabit. Our approach is rooted in traditional teachings\, while remaining deeply responsive to the modern body\, nervous system\, and lived experience. \nThis is a chance to explore yoga in a way that is inclusive\, adaptive\, and quietly powerful\, whether you’re completely new or returning after time away. \nDetails: \n– Open to those who haven’t yet practised with us\n– Suitable for ages 16+\n– All levels welcome\, including complete beginners\n– Mats provided\n– Wear comfortable clothing that allows ease of movement (and rest) \nBooking is essential. \nWe look forward to welcoming you into the space.

SUMMARY:Bringing Democracy to Nether Edge
DESCRIPTION:We will explore how Nether Edge can become a democracy\, where everyone is involved in making decisions and where we can grow our own power in a way that helps us all flourish and supports other neighbourhoods and Sheffield as a whole. \nDemocracy is not just about Westminster. Democracy is meant to include everyone and about changing the world together so everyone benefits. Throughout history and around the world there are many different ways communities have made decisions together. We do not need to just stick with the systems we’ve inherited. We can imagine\, then build something much better. \nThe City of Sheffield is full of people who want to act like citizens. Increasingly people are recognising the city is made up of 147 different neighbourhoods and each neighbourhood can have more power and the chance to make its own decisions. This can help us face some of the big challenges we face: \nInclusion - welcoming everyone and overcoming prejudice and discrimination\nCare - helping each other and making sure everyone is connected and can thrive\nJustice - sharing our resources fairly so everyone has what they need\nDemocracy - making decisions together so every voice is heard\nNature - taking care of the natural world and all forms of life \nOur hope is that this will not just be theory. We can organise ourselves to make decisions and take action. We can include everyone if we try and we can create a democratic Nether Edge to help us tackle the problems we face and make sure everyone gets to lead a good life. \nThis event will be run by Kate West of Family Voice (www.familyvoicesheffield.org) and Simon Duffy of Citizen Network (www.citizen-network.org). They will share some examples of democratic possibilities from around the world to begin the conversation. \nThis event will be a workshop. We will share some initial ideas\, but we will be hoping that everyone can help generate practical ideas for creating a democratic Nether Edge and discover who is keen to take these ideas forward. \nIf you want to get involved or have ideas about we can all work together as a community then this event is for you.

SUMMARY:The Living Line LIVE!
DESCRIPTION:A poetry reading by The Living Line\, a local group of women poets\, with founder Cora Greenhill. We met for 12 years to read brilliant women's poetry and write our own\, much of which is now published. Books for sale! \nI'd been writng and publishing poetry for some years\, and discovering a world of modern women poets that I'd never come across at school or university. Wonderful poets whose concerns I identified with. Feminist poets. \nWhen I enrolled on an MA in poetry writing at MMU in 2008\, it was because there were two outstanding feminists leading the programme: Carol Ann Duffy and Vicky Bertram. I was shocked when I received the reading lists: almost exactly the same 20th century 'canon' as I'd studied as an undergraduate in the late 60s\, virtually all white men. \nIn consequence\, I began to run The Living Line\, a group for local women poets. In monthly meetings we read and discussed inspiring poems by modern and contemporary women writers\, using them as prompts for our own writing\, and sharing feedback. We did this for twelve years\, on zoom through Covid. \nTonight's reading will be a reunion and a closure for this project. Local poets\, including Jenny Hockey\, Abbi Flint and Jane Monach have gone on to great things and are publishing wonderful poetry\, while I have moved on to work more on fiction. I'm enormously proud and moved by our part in continuing a magnificent lineage\, and look forward to sharing some of the rich harvest with you here in Nether Edge. \nSuitable for adults and young adults.

SUMMARY:An evening with Mills & Farrell at Cafe No9
DESCRIPTION:Mills & Farrell are noted for their rootsy minimalist approach. Using two voices and acoustic instrumentation\, inspired by Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings\, The Milk Carton Kids\, and the Waifs\, the duo have a timeless sound characterized by intricately woven acoustic guitars and tight harmonies. Coming from backgrounds of Australian rock (David Farrell) and Nova Scotia folk (Janet Mills)\, geographic improbability adds an undefinable element to their modern and traditional offerings. \nOn their return visit to Cafe #9\, the duo will be playing songs from newly released and highly acclaimed album ‘Crooked Path’\, born from the dramatic relocation to the Northeast of England in the town of Consett\, outside Newcastle\, from their previous base in Nova Scotia\, Canada. \n‘…deliciously lilting\, Tex-Mex-flavoured…’ (Folk London) \n‘…natural warmth full of casual charm….’ (Americana UK) \n‘…that kind of rootsy folk that despite being stripped back\, feels full of body (The Crack Magazine) \n‘…evoke feelings of Simon and Garfunkel…’ (NE Volume Magazine) \n‘…delicately interwoven guitars that synchronize seamlessly with rich\, engaging vocal harmonies…’ (Folk & Honey) \n‘…styles and voices complement each other in wonderful collective talent…’ (FATEA magazine)

Here he built a country mansion\, ‘Kenwood’ (now part of the Kenwood Hall Hotel)\, and in 1853 he announced plans to develop the land next to it into a suburb of 'gentleman's residences' called Kenwood Park\, intended for well-to-do people wishing to move out of the smoke and dirt of the city centre. A \nssisted by Robert Marnock\, designer and curator of the Botanical Gardens\, he laid out winding\, tree-lined streets divided into building plots which over the ensuing decades became filled with the large Victorian houses of Sheffield’s business and professional class. Kenwood Park\, its avenues\, trees and houses\, remains today one of Sheffield's most attractive suburbs. \nThis walk explores its early development and the ups and downs of its later history\, and looks at its streets and houses and the people who lived in them. The walk begins outside the Stag’s Head pub on Psalter Lane\, lasts for one and a half to two hours\, and finishes on Wostenholm Road\, where buses run into the city centre. \nThe walk begins from The Stag's Head\, 15 Psalter Lane\, S11 8YN.
